<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "lucida grande" , "bitstream vera sans" , "verdana" , sans-serif; line-height: 18px;">So after an insanely long hiatus, Wednesday night found my brother and I together taking in the Q87.7 concert at the Allstate Arena. We were there to see Queens of the Stone Age and QOTSA only, so leaving before the final band gave us a little wiggle room (with our wives). "They don't expect us home later" turned into "let's try to knock out another Old Style Bar that is out of the way". The only problem was it was -2 degrees out...who the hell is gonna be out in this weather?
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "lucida grande" , "bitstream vera sans" , "verdana" , sans-serif; line-height: 18px;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "lucida grande" , "bitstream vera sans" , "verdana" , sans-serif; line-height: 18px;">Our first trip was to Heeney's on the 8200 block of west Irving Park...no lights on..."for sale" sign on the building...looks like another "RIP Old Style Bar". Good thing I had a backup, and that place was the Kat Klub. The only bar left in Galewood and around since 1980, the Kat Klub is the an oasis of a place right before you get to Oak Park, or if you are going east, heading into the chaos which is the North Austin neighborhood. As we walked in, there were two regulars and a lone bartender, who turned and probably thought "who are these idiots coming here in this weather?" We ordered our Old Styles, munched on some peanuts and immediately noticed their amazing Old Style Sign light on the back mirror.
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "lucida grande" , "bitstream vera sans" , "verdana" , sans-serif; line-height: 18px;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "lucida grande" , "bitstream vera sans" , "verdana" , sans-serif; line-height: 18px;">Before we had finished our beers, we were deep in a "what have you had stolen while you've lived in Chicago" conversation with the bartender and regulars...shockingly nobody mentioned "priceless jewels", or "my BMW". We have both had bikes stolen in Chicago...I guess that is a rite of passage, but luckily nothing else... I really wish I could have stolen that Old Style sign, but maybe I should get back in touch with that Old Style rep. Or maybe when we finally finish the Project, Pabst Brewing Company (who own Old Style and pretty much every other cheap beer your grandpa drank) will hook us up. Gotta have goals!

Carol's - the 4am/5am bar that's usually muttered in the sentence "Why in the f--k did I go to Carol's last night?" Carol's is not a bar that you ever make plans to go to... Nobody ever says "Hey, let's go to Carol's tonight" at 5pm. It's usually around bar time, and you have a limited number of options...you don't want to go home, so it's "you want to keep drinking? Me too! Let's go to Carol's!"

The exception is if you and your brother are doing a tour of Old Style bars and blogging about it, and Carol's just so happens to have an Old Style sign out front. So we actually did plan on going to Carol's, but we still didn't get there until 1am early Friday morning. Surprisingly, it wasn't crowded at all...there was a group of about 10 people, which we later found out were all co-workers celebrating someones birthday, and then a few random locals, and us.

The bar seemed unfamiliar, but that's what happens when you see it sober for the first time. I hadn't been here in ages...since my single days. It was a lot dingier than I remembered... It's kinda like the sledding hill you went to as a kid, and then you come back with your kid, and you're like "wasn't this hill a lot bigger?" Yes...because you were eight! It's a matter of perspective. Just like when you are drunk, bars seem cleaner and beer tastes better and girls look hotter and karaoke is more fun and country music is awesome... But that is what makes Carol's work...the karaoke on Thursday nights...and the live honky tonk music on Fridays and Saturdays. It's unique...and after a few beers with some good friends...it's really really fun.

Unfortunately, this night was a little slow, so we had to make our own fun. My brother is a musician, so he had no problem going up and singing some songs...me on the other hand, I'm more of a sit back and observe guy. So, as I'm listening to the younger bro belt out "Easy Lover" by Phil Collins, I get approached by a guy asking if he could sketch my portrait. And he would do it in 5 minutes. Sure, I tell him, and then he creates this masterpiece:
So now I'm just thinking of how I can convince my wife to get this framed. Someday when we own a house (with a bar, of course), this is going on the wall. Thanks again to Chris Wright, and to Carol's for finally giving me a experience at your bar I will remember!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5649497631373038612.post-71403726811726066622013-03-14T23:25:00.000-05:002016-04-12T22:24:07.129-05:00Bar #56: Max's Place4621 N.
Max's Place, like many Old Style Bars, is a survivor. Many Old Style Bars are places that thrived during the 70s and 80s, but as neighborhoods evolved and gentrified, the neighborhood bar started to lose it's appeal. Max's, along with Carol's Pub up the street (post on them coming soon), we're a part of a lively Country-Western bar and live music scene that was on Clark St. from Montrose to Lawrence back in the 70's and early 80's. Max's has been in the same family for four decades, and they have been able to keep customers coming in the door to this day.

We strolled in close to midnight on a Thursday night, and there was still a decent crowd there. Definitely all locals... We introduced ourselves to the bartender and she goes, "Hi, I'm Cindy" and looks down at her boobs, where "Cindy" is tattooed above her right breast. Genius! I mean, that definitely helped us remember her name...I think more women should do this and wear lo-cut tops :) Cindy was great to talk to, and the Old Style was cold and cheap. Not bad for early Friday morning!

Max's is an A+ dive (okay, maybe an A- because of the weird bathroom)...we had a great time and have an appreciation for places like this. The people who own the bar and their employees love this place. They love their customers and their customers love them. It's truly one big family, and with the county music in the jukebox and the Old Style on tap, they aren't forgetting their roots.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">K’s Dugout is a solid neighborhood bar in Chicago’s Bowmanville neighborhood. Bowmanville? Yes, there is such a place...located just west of Andersonville, it’s borders are Foster to the South, Ravenswood to the East, Western to the west, and Bryn Mawr to the north. The bar is situated about a block down from Amundsen High School, where I hear it’s a popular after school hang out for some of the teachers (CPS life is tough!)
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">

It was quite busy for a Thursday evening, but K's sponsors a number of sports teams, does weekly trivia, has a decent pool table, pinball, and even Ms. Pac Man! There was also a Hawks game on when we were there, so it was a good mix of young people and regulars. Even with the crowd, we were able to get two seats at the bar, where we were greeted by the bartender, Patty. "First time here, guys? Thanks for coming in!" I was impressed...she was working her butt off behind the bar but still knew we weren't regulars, and didn't make us feel bad about it, either. We were able to chat with her a little bit later, and she said the bar is usually pretty crowded...they usually have something going on every night of the week. No wonder why she had a constant smile on her face...it's nice to work somewhere where everyone is always having a good time - I know we sure did. <span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; white-space: pre-wrap;">Even though we were rookies in the Dugout, we felt like we had been a part of the team for a very long time.
So after our lunch at Frank and Mary's Tavern, Mike the Firefighter and I decide to check out an Old Style bar that has eluded my brother and I at least a half dozen times.

We have stopped by this bar at all hours of the day, and it has never been open. As we went by, we noticed lights on inside - victory!

We were the only ones inside the bar, which we found out closes at 8pm on most days. Soon after a gentleman came in who was quite the historian of this neighborhood. He and the bartender knew Warren and everyone else at The Levee. Back in the 70's, there were over ten bars around Pulaski and now CJ's and The Levee are the only ones left. Unfortunately, CJ's may not be around for much longer. It seems like The Levee has done a better job changing over the year, and making the bar accessible to everyone in the neighborhood. CJ's is mostly serving the same people it has over the last 40 years, and that number is dwindling. When you close your doors at 8pm, you're not getting too many new customers, except for some crazy guys searching out Old Style bars. And I think that CJ's is just fine with that.
Frank and Mary's has been at it's location on Elston Avenue since the early 1970s, and contrary to what you may think, Frank and Mary are brother and sister. They are like the White Stripes of the dive bar world, except both Frank and Mary are important parts of the operation -- Mary cooking the food and Frank behind the bar. Wait, you mean that Jack and Meg White weren't brother and sister?

I was joined for lunch this Friday by my friend Mike the Firefighter. Unfortunately, Mary wasn't there because of some recent hip surgery, but her food was, and it was damn good. We ordered the roasted pork with potatoes, gravy and steamed carrots. As I mentioned before, this heaping pile of goodness and two beers was less than $15, and there is an option to order a half-plate as well. They only serve lunch...usually from 11am to 2pm.

The crowd was made up of regulars. Frank knew everyone by name (except us), so of course he engaged us in conversation, just because we were the newbies. We had a good talk about the local baseball teams (Frank doesn't have a favorite) and then the phone started ringing. Yep, to-go orders. A few people came in soon after the phone calls to pick up their food (including a cabbie), and Frank knew them all.

Frank and Mary have a great business plan: keep it simple and be nice to your customers. It doesn't get much better than this. Frank and Mary's Tavern is a true gem of Chicago.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5649497631373038612.post-43130742584517688282012-05-30T14:31:00.000-05:002012-05-30T14:31:16.991-05:00Bar #52: Question Mark Bar6918 Grand Ave.
The Question Mark Bar is about as west as you can get in Chicago before hitting the suburbs. Located in the Montclare neighborhood, the Question Mark is the last stop on your way to Elmwood Park. The bar was a lot smaller than I expected, a real hole in the wall with not much space. There were a few video poker machines at the front and a jukebox in the back. The crowd this particular night were lonely, middle-aged white guys ogling the attractive, middle-aged black bartender. In between serving drinks she was putting up a killer playlist on the juke...all classic funk and R&B music from the 70's and 80's.

Then I see the bartender pour herself a beer in one of those medium-size gas station cups, also with a bendy straw. Is there something I don't know about? Also, the bartender's name was on the cup: Adele. Not expecting that, either. The questions were building up...

We finally got a chance to as Adele about the origins of the bar. "The name?", she said, "I have no idea...matter of fact, I don't think anyone knows...the bar has been here since the 40's. I guess if we knew the answer we'd have to change the name of the bar!"
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5649497631373038612.post-5919810302335068872012-05-30T12:46:00.000-05:002012-05-31T11:07:37.196-05:00Bar #51: Jack's Stop Inn

WGN made a huge mistake when they put reruns of 30 Rock in the 10:00pm time stop right after the news. Let's just say that the humor of 30 Rock was "over the head" of the four regulars who were sitting at the bar with us, but the fact that the episode was a Halloween episode made it even worse.
Our 50th Old Style Bar was a place called Ski’s. If you go there expecting a lodge atmosphere, you’ll be quite disappointed. This place is named Ski’s for another reason. The great part about Ski’s is that it is a true dive bar, and a true Old Style bar. The sign says it all! It’s not positioned along a main street, but two blocks off of Milwaukee Avenue, just stuck in the neighborhood (similar to Millie’s and the Corner). Walking in, my brother and I realize we’ve been to this type of bar before (Rose’s, Sunnyside Tap, Sportsmans), but for some reason, Ski’s seemed even more familiar to me. The wood paneling on the walls, the lone pool table, and a few cheap liquor bottles behind the bar…this was my grandparent’s basement, reincarnated. Until I was around 10 years old, my grandparents lived in a small house in Harvey, IL. It wasn’t much, but my grandpa had his own bar in the basement. Even back then I thought it was cool, and vowed to have my own basement-bar someday (still hasn’t happened yet). The grandkids weren’t allowed to use the cue sticks while playing pool, for fear that we would ruin the green felt top. We had to roll the cue ball with our hands, and this is how I “shot” pool until I was in high school.

Ski’s was a little different from Bob’s Place (a.k.a.
Grandpa’s basement). He didn’t
have Old Style or Okocim on tap (which were the only draft options), and his TV
wasn’t on a Polish channel. I’m
pretty sure we were watching the Polish version of “How I Met Your Mother”,
except their Robin was a lot hotter and blond. The bartender was a sweet old lady who reminded me of my
grandmother, but spent most of our time there in the back room talking to her
husband (who did not remind me of my grandfather). There were two other old guys at the bar, both paying
attention to the TV and the bottom of their glass. I am assuming that with it's proximity to Logan Square, this place may get a little crowded on the weekends, but tonight we were reminded of the past, and I almost wished we were asked to not use the cue sticks.

I used to drive past Relax lounge all the time when I lived in Logan Square, but it seemed like a shady dive bar, so I never went in. Now that I have been doing this blog, I was excited to finally get to Relax, but alas, it closed and now Moe's Tavern is in it's place. Doh!

Nothing unique about this place - it's obviously a ripoff of Moe's from "The Simpson's", down to the Simpson art on the awning and windows. They don't have Duff beer (actually a decent selection of craft beers), but you can order a Flaming Moe!

The interior is really stale...it seems like an office in a strip mall that was converted into a bar. This couldn't have been how Relax was...Moe's was just very BORING and too clean--it had no character. Christ, it had CARPET! There was a cute bartender, but that couldn't help Moe's, as there were only 3 other people in the bar.

So, after doing some research...it appears that Moe's was served with a cease-and-desist order from Twentieth Century Fox for copyright infringement. It appears they haven't taken it too seriously, as some "minor" changes were made to the mural on the wall. A great bar gets it character from it's bartenders, customers, and overall atmosphere. Moe's has a long way to go, as the only character it has is in the form of a 20 year-old cartoon.
Goofy's is another decent neighborhood bar, with nothing too exciting about it. The owner's nickname is Goofy, and there is a lot of Disney memoribilia strewn about the bar... The bartender was kind of a tough guy, so we didn't feel comfortable taking pictures. One beer, and OUT!
For some reason I thought this bar was called Podlasie, but that place is actually next door. As we pulled up, we didn't see any sign other than Old Style and Okocim.
So, Podhale is the southernmots region of Poland, which actually includes the town of Zakopane, but that wasn't what caught our eye. "Mr. ZJ"? Who was that? The running joke for the next 10 minutes was "if you don't know Mr. ZJ, you can't afford it..." If you have no idea what I am talking about, shame on you, and here you go.

Inside, we were greeted by a wonderfully nice bartender who spoke very broken English, but attempted to have full conversations with us, mainly about the horrible weather Poland had been getting this winter. After 15 minutes, she turned the TV to the Polish news channel, and something bad must have happened, because everyone (the other three people) were fixated on the TV. We finished our 2nd beer and snuck out.
After leaving K&H we went a short distance to Ted's Place Ltd. Another neighborhood bar, and more pool, but this place had a completely different vibe than K&H. Complete silence. It was like you were watching golf. We found this out the hard way as our conversation got a little loud, because nobody else said anything during a shot. There were a few times where we had the whole bar staring at us with those "Shut the Hell Up" eyes. It was an older crowd, but the intensity in the games was still there.

We were also a little confused as both teams had the same damn Ted's Place shirts on, but then realized that they were same shirts with different addresses...one was Central Ave. and the other was Agatite Ave. Whoa. Crazy. "Shhhhh....". Ok, people, we get it...

Two guys walked out saying "let's go to another bar, we can't win here". My brother and I walked about and pretty much said the same thing...

K&H Lounge looks like a normal dive in the Portage Park neighborhood, but on this Wednesday night it was JAM PACKED. The reason? Pool. Lots of drunk middle aged guys yelling after every shot, high-fiving, and drinking cheap, cold beer. These guys had their own sticks, and also had their women there to cheer them on and drive them home at the end of the night. I'm pretty sure nobody noticed us walking in...we just sat at the bar and watched the evening unfold. These games were so intense there were almost a few near-fights...I was really hoping for our first Old Style Bar bar-brawl.

It was so crowded, we didn't get a chance to chat with the bartender, and didn't want to talk up the locals...everyone was here for the pool, not to talk to a couple of newbies. We did get a good laugh at the "siding" that was flanking the main door. Very strange. K&H is the ultimate neighborhood bar with a very solid clientele. This place won't be going anywhere anytime soon...
J&L, the bar with an identity problem... On the outside awning, it says G&L, but inside above the bar it says J&L. So which is it? A quick scan of the billiards trophies tells us it's J&L, but what gives? I ask the bartender and she says, "The owner is right there, you can ask him..." I look down the bar and this 80 year-old man starts talking to me in Polish. I smile and look back to the bartender and she says, "I think he changed his mind on the bar's name after the sign was already made. It's named after family members, so maybe he didn't want to leave anyone out." A likely story, but I think either the awning company screwed it up or the owner accidentally put a "G" instead of a "J" when he filled out the order.
Anyway, about the bar...it's a good size place, and advertises "FREE POOL EVERYDAY". This area is a mecca for pool players (more about this later), and J&L had taken home a few trophies over the years. The decoration is "Wisconsin Basement" meets "90's living room", with wood paneling on the walls, except for one wall which is all pink. The bar top also had this weird mauve color going on...not very manly and very dated (like most Old Style bars). Overall, not a bad little place on a real sketchy stretch of North Cicero.
I moved into my first apartment in Chicago back in 1999 after graduating from college. It was in Uptown just north of Irving Park Rd., and there wasn't much of a bar scene near us (and still isn't). My roommate and I brought it upon ourselves to search out destination bars that sounded cool. This consisted of us actually looking in the phone book under bars/taverns. That's when we saw it: Tuman's Alcohol Abuse Center.
The best bar name EVER. It was like the Holy Grail of bars... When we finally made it there it was the spring of 2000. We went during the day on a weekend, because the Ukie Village neighborhood was still kind of a sketchy place, and we had never been down there before. The main thing I remember was how dark it was...it was a sunny day, and when we walked in pretty much any outside light was gone. I also remember how damn smokey it was...there were a few regulars there and every one of them was smoking...packs of cigarettes placed on the bar along with a few dollar bills that would buy them at least 2 more beers. I don't think we stayed there long...it was intimidating...had one beer and left, but we experienced the enigma that was Tuman's Alcohol Abuse Center.

The bar closed in 2003 and reopened in 2005 with the Tuman's name sans "Alcohol Abuse Center". Please read this wonderful write up of Tuman's, which done by the Chicago Bar Project back when it was still open. The quotes are priceless, and is a wonderful testament of how beloved this bar once was.

Back to the present: walking into Tuman's on a Thursday, the bar was PACKED. Probably the most crowded Old Style bar we've been at. The problem was that Tuman's 2.0 could fit in perfectly in Wrigleyville or Lincoln Ave. I don't want to be another people that bitches about the clientele at these types of places, but it was sad that at a place that was once cash only, every transaction I saw was made with a credit card. All "bomb shots" and bottles of Corona (sigh). They did keep the original window sign, which is hanging on the back wall...at least they understand the history of this classic bar.

Tuman's has been reinvented and is a popular place, but I think it's the bar that's least deserving of the Old Style sign hanging out front.

UPDATE (Dec. '11): Tuman's look down their Old Style sign...good riddance.
Ola's is another "slashie" and is located in Ukrainian Village, which has the highest concentration of Old Style bars in the city. Its "Zimne Piwo" Old Style sign is easily hidden among the trees and condos along this busy stretch of Damen, with "Ola's Liquors" barely visible on an old, brown awning.

On this particular Thursday there was a pretty decent crowd, but it was tame because Anna was behind the bar, not Agnes, who is known to have made grown men cry. All was not lost, because the group of three guys next to us were trying to see if Anna could tell which one of them was gay, and then proceeded to tell her a story about a friend who loved dry-humping more than sex. Yes, apparently when this guy was in the mood, he would excuse himself, go to his room, put on some Umbro soccer shorts and just go to town on you. Um...

So anyway, this place is also a liquor store, with all the bottles nicely placed behind the bar. I was also impressed with the range of sizes of each type of liquor (1.75ml, 750ml, pints) and also this party in a bottle (man, it's awful):
Time Out Sports Bar is just north of the upscale Ravenswood Gardens and Ravenswood Manor, part of a beautiful stretch of retail shops just off the Rockwood stop on the CTA Brown Line. It's a great location, and one of the few areas where the El runs on ground level. Our soon to be imprisoned ex-Governor lived a few blocks from this place -- wonder if he ever stopped in for a beer?

I wasn't going to do a write up on this particular visit, because I was hoping for a more exciting experience. I thought about coming back on a Thursday or Friday night, but then I realized that this visit was the true representation of an Old Style Bar.

We watched Wheel of Fortune.

Yep. My brother and I stopped by before our softball game so it was a bit early. There were 4 people at the bar, one who looked like Stanley from The Office, another who sounded just like Wanda Sykes, a guy drinking Powers and Coke, and another guy having a very tough time trying to figure out what to order for delivery. Gotta love bars that let you order in... Anyway, the point is that neither of these 4 came in together...but they all knew each other and were having a fun time watching Pat & Vanna.

Isn't this what a neighborhood bar is all about? People stopping in after a long day at work, having a beer or cocktail before they head home... Maybe they have someone to come home to, maybe they don't. Regardless, their neighborhood bar is a second home...a place they feel comfortable. Maybe they choose to share their problems/stories with the bartender, maybe they don't. We had a great time chatting with the folks at the bar and then went off to softball. This place is a great companion bar to Loafer's, right up the street on Rockwell and Lawrence.

PART I - THE HISTORY

Zakopane, named after a town in Southern Poland, is the last true Polish bar standing on Division St. (a.k.a "Polish Broadway"), which at one point in the 30's and 40's was the hottest place in the city to catch live Polka music. Polka was HUGE at the time in Chicago, and one of the best polka musicians in the world, Li'l Wally, played at the bar with his band on a regular basis. This guy was so good, he was one of the first two people to be inducted into the International Polka Hall of Fame, certifying himself as the "Polka King of Chicago". The other inductee back in 1969, Frankie Yankovic (no relation to Weird Al), was the biggest Polka musician in Cleveland. He also wrote the song "Let's Go Go Go White Sox", but honestly, he's no Steve Goodman.

(Side note: Our grandfather, who was an avid Old Style drinker and Polka fan, gave my brother an accordion when he was in high school. After Frank Yankovic died in 1998, my brother wrote Frank's widow a letter saying he was a big fan. The woman sent Aaron a huge care package a few weeks later, with stickers and cassette tapes, saying she was so happy he had younger fans...it was awesome.)

Back in 1999, Chicago's favorite punk-polka band The Polkaholics played a legendary show with Li'l Wally back at Zakopane. Having retired to Florida, Wally came back to play this epic show, which was captured in a documentary. Zakopane rarely has shows anymore, hiding the stage behind a red curtain, but anyone would be luck to share the same stage as the Polkaholics and Li'l Wally.
PART II - THE EXPERIENCE

If you don't look high enough, you may miss the Old Style sign above Zakopane. It's actually hanging on the 2nd story of the building. What you won't miss is the Zakopane sign, along with the sign of the previous bar, Maria's Lounge...yep, that one is still up too. When you walk in, the bar is on the right and the jukebox on the left towards the end of the bar. Bathrooms are on the left and in the back is the aforementioned stage area with the red curtain.

The real attraction at Zakopane is Monika.

The blonde, curvaceous bartender worked the crowd with the grace of a ballerina. One minute she's pouring shots of Zubrowka for a group at one end of the bar, then dancing with some shady old guys on the dance floor, and then outside having a smoke with some more of the bar regulars. The bar was packed, and she was gone for 5-10 minutes and people didn't mind waiting for her to get back to order their next beer. As she walked back in, necks turned as she went over and put in a bunch of songs on the jukebox. G'n'R...nice. The bar was hopping...it seemed like everyone knew each other and everyone was just having the time of their lives. This bar had the most energy of all the bars we've been to. If you walked by, you'd definitely say the bar was "hopping". Everything revolved around Monika...it was incredible. More people started dancing in the back as Guns n Roses turned in to Polish dance music...the place was up for grabs.

Li'l Wally would have been proud.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5649497631373038612.post-71425156667681208452011-10-27T08:19:00.000-05:002011-10-27T08:22:12.678-05:00Bar #39: Bill's Pub4104 N. Pulaski Ave.
I was excited about Bill's because some of their Yelp reviews talked about how cool the place was decorated for Halloween. Well, that was then and this was now...there wasn't a single decoration up, just some weak wooden replicas of the Chicago baseball stadiums. Bill's doesn't distinguish itself as a Cubs or Sox bar, but Cubs fans usually sit on the left side of the bar where the Wrigley replica is, and Sox fans on the right side under U.S. Cellular.
The bartender, Sylvia, was a nice woman...she even gave me a cough drop...was getting over a cold. Not sure what brand it was--it just said "cough drop" on the wrapper. It could have been 10 years old for all I know.
Oh, and considering the clientele that frequents Bill's Pub, this is probably a good thing:

The Home Tavern has the most accurate name of any bar we've been in...golf clubs in the corner, plants everywhere, and a huge bag of dog food sitting next to the pool table. I think we warped into some dude's basement when we walked in the door. The dog food belonged to a nice black lab named Potato who never moved the whole time we were there. Also, there is a very creepy collection of stuffed toys that hangs from the ceiling (no picture, which I will describe why in a minute).

The highlights of the evening were this exchange between two regulars:

"Hey Nancy, what's new?"
"Well, I saw that 'Craigslist Killer' movie the other night, and it really reminded me of you..."

Also, there were a couple of locals hanging out, and these guys were true locals. They grew up and have lived in Lincoln Park for 40+ years...never left the neighborhood as it has changed over the years. These were some tough mofos too...one guy, Mike, decided to tell us his entire life story, and it scared the shit out of me. I didn't want to break eye contact in fear that he was gonna bust his beer bottle over my head.

Mike told me about his four daughters, and how his oldest one was dating a real degenerate, and that their car was just repossessed. He also then told me that he might have to deal with the situation himself (like this guy), and then tells us about his time in prison (stealing cars) and shows us the scars from when he got stabbed (was hanging in Mexico with the wrong people). Then he rants about how technology is ruining the kids nowadays...needless to say my iPhone stayed in my pocket the whole time.

I did my part though. I listened. Mike and I hugged it out when we left. I survived.

A warning to all you Lincoln Park-ers with the popped collars, texting your buddies non-stop, drinking Bud Light Lime and doing Jaeger shots. Don't go to the Home Tavern, because if Mike is there, he will mess you up...
If you thought the Old Style Bar Project was all about those square signs, think again. We celebrate all types of Old Style signage...no discrimination. Further down on Montrose is Peacock Liquors, with an amazing sign that says "Old Style Lager" underneath.
"Is this just a liquor store?", we wondered... We walk into the store and are surrounded by boxes upon boxes of beer. Shoulder high, but it's a pretty small place. We make our way through the beer maze and come across a cute cat, and then meet the owner (of the store? Cat? No idea). We look beyond them and see a bar that looks transported from a basement in Wisconsin. There is a man behind the bar who couldn't have been less than 70 serving beers to a few customers who didn't bring the average age down much lower. "Bars closed," the owner says. Our watches say 11:45pm, but we won't argue, but we will be back. Oh yes, random bar in Peacock Liquors, we'll most definitely be back.
So we finally made it back to Peacock after our first "visit" a few months ago. They actually let us in this time, as it was still early. There was a good group sitting at the bar, and we loved our options on tap!
We chatted with the bartender, Sal, who had been working there for over 30 years and was part owner of the place...he said that this location has been Peacock Liquors for almost 80 years, right after prohibition, and that the neon sign has been up since the 50s or 60s.

Sal was an old guy, probably in his 70's, and was decked out in a nice vest...he kinda reminded me of Lloyd the Bartender from The Shining, except I had to pay for my drinks and well, Sal was very much alive... He also told us that the cats name was Garth, and I immediately thought of "Wayne's World", but my brother informed me what kind of music that was on the jukebox..."both kinds".

Peacock Liquors is a one of a kind, with a one of a kind sign.

Most people are afraid of something--heights, the dark, public speaking, calculus... With me, it's spiders. I hate em...make my wife kill them... Other bugs, snakes...I'm totally cool with them, but not spiders. People say if you want to conquer your fear you need to take it head on. Well, I'm not going to jump into a tub with tarantulas, but I did end up conquering a different fear last week. My fear of Jadran Liquors...

Jadran Liquors is this little bodega-looking place on Irving Park that I had been scouting out ever since I started The Project. It looks like one of those sketchy corner stores that you can buy the essentials and not much else, and the two times I have scouted it out there have been older men hanging out, sitting in folding chairs, drinking bottles of strange liquor, yelling at each other. Why would anyone want to go there? If I lived next door, I'd rather drive 20 miles to a Wal-Mart than buy toilet paper from this place.

Anyway, my brother and I needed to get this done. They have an Old Style sign out front so we had to go in... We got to the corner across the street, and we see 8 gentlemen sitting down all looking at a guy standing up, speaking and pointing...he is very animated in whatever he is trying to get across. What was going on here? Was this a local CAPS meeting? Was that guy an undercover cop finally busting the joint?

We were pretty nervous at this point, so we ended up walking one block away on the other side of the street, crossing the street at the light (Sacramento), and then walking back down towards Jadran. When we were getting close, I turned to my brother and said, "I'm just gonna go in...".

"You are?"

"Well, you had better be right behind me...", I responded. The whole time I have this picture of Biff Tannen in my head (What are you...Chicken?).

I walk in, everyone stops talking and this guy immediately grabs my arm... "$2 to enter the bar," he says with a menacing look and this death grip on my arm... What the hell is going on? Are we gonna leave this place alive?

Everyone else then starts laughing and I realize this crazy man is just joking... They then ask us where we are from, and they don't mean what neighborhood... "Um, well, we're American...uh, German, Scottish..." They didn't care, but they did care to tell us where they were from..we met:

Joey, a Serbian who worked downtown and used to be on Blago's campaign team.

Some guy from Croatia who referred to Joey as "the enemy" and told us two of the most racist jokes I have ever heard.

A younger guy from South America who was talking about his time in the army and mentioned the term "friendly fire" a number of times.

Edgar, who was from Montenegro and the guy who greeted us at the door. He paid for our Old Styles, and then asked if we wanted a shot...I wasn't going to say no. Shot glasses? Nope. He just put a bottle of Hennessy up to our lips...still hoping I don't get mouth herpes.

We spent the next 15 minutes talking to Joey, who proceeded to tell us that the other guys playing cards at the table and not speaking English were also from the former Yugoslavia. I didn't get around to ask him how the hell this place stays open, while looking at the rolls of TP on the shelf that had "99¢" written in ink on each individual roll. We also saw Joey kill two cockroaches that scurried across the floor (I would have totally got that). Disgusting.

Once 8:00pm hit, the old man sitting at the door who hasn't said a damn word starts motioning towards the door, saying something not in English. Joey tells us that the place closes every night at 8, which is probably a good thing. As we walk out, Edgar gives me a hard slap on the back and says, "Thanks for coming in, guys...", which I think was his way of saying, "Don't come back anytime soon..."Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5649497631373038612.post-38720590759715850612011-09-20T08:25:00.000-05:002011-09-20T08:25:01.564-05:00Bar #35: Steve's Sports Bar & Lounge3524 W. Steve's door was locked when we tried it, but after a few seconds, a younger man in a wheelchair came over and unlocked it. He said they were open, so we walked in, went through the saloon doors and grabbed a spot at the bar. Steve was just finishing up some food so he cleaned up and went to the other side of the bar to get us our Old Styles.

Did I mention that this place had saloon doors? Freaking awesome. Unfortunately, that was the only awesome thing about this place.

After Steve got our beers he was nowhere to be found...I had read that Steve also owns the laundromat next door, so maybe he was over there. That's when I noticed the security camera in the corner, pointed at the bar. Seriously? Also, wheelchair guy was just hanging out right behind us...not saying a word. We felt like Walter White and Jesse Pinkman in the meth lab...was Steve watching us? Also, the show "Cops" was on all the TV's...fitting.

Another thing I didn't like about this place...it was the most cluttered bar ever, even more than Rose's, and at least Rose just had odd collectables and couches everywhere. Behind Steve's bar there were stacks of paper, receipts, empty liquor bottles, random pictures, books, and who knows what else. You know that friend you have in grade school who never lets you in their house because it's too messy and he's embarrassed? Well, I bet it looked like the inside of Steve's bar. Ugh. We drank our beers, waved to the camera, and left.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
